Banner Year Award - CHRISTINA CASSARO & HAVIAH MIGHTY

sponsored by SOCAN Foundation

  • Haviah Mighty and manager Christina Cassaro have made Canadian hip-hop history together. In 2019, with Christina in her corner, Haviah was the first Black woman and the first hip-hop artist to win the prestigious Polaris Music Prize, and she became the first woman to win a JUNO Award in the Best Rap Album/EP of the Year category in 2022. Haviah was also the only Canadian nominee at the 2022 BET Hip-Hop Awards in the ‘Best International Flow’ category.

Working together, this team is continuing to push forward to carve out spaces that boldly defy gendered expectations for women in hip-hop. With this drive and energy, there’s no doubt that there are more groundbreaking accolades and achievements on the horizon.

  • Haviah Mighty is continuing to push forward to carve out spaces that boldly defy gendered expectations for women in hip-hop.

2019 saw Haviah earn break-out success with her album, 13th Floor, making her the first hip-hop artist and the first Black woman to win the Polaris Music Prize, celebrating the “Best Canadian Album of the Year” - but Mighty didn’t stop there. In 2022, with her mixtape, Stock Exchange, Haviah made history once again as the first woman to ever win the JUNO Rap Album of the Year category and is the only Canadian nominee at the 2022 BET Hip-Hop Awards in the ‘Best International Flow’ category. Recognition has spread internationally, garnering praise from the likes of Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, GRM Daily, FADER, Hot New Hip Hop, and so many more.

Based out of Brampton via Toronto, Haviah has spent a lifetime developing her skills as a songwriter, vocalist, producer, and performer, culminating in a style of profound introspection and incisive socio-political critique. Her dynamic combinations of rap, song, and instrumental transition seamlessly from hip-hop to soul to afrobeats with a meticulous flow and cadence that transcends any traditional expectation of genre.

Mighty didn’t need to change her birth name when she decided to dedicate her career to music. Mighty could not better describe Haviah’s craft of provocative challenges and uncompromising truths.

In Mighty’s corner as a supporter, confidant, and teammate is Christina Cassaro, an artist manager based in Toronto with years of industry experience. First working in the Canadian music ecosystem via Jury Supervision at granting agency, FACTOR (Foundation Assisting Canadian Talent on Recordings), Christina then moved on to artist management at the iconic Canadian record label, Arts & Crafts (Broken Social Scene, Fiest). It was there that she learned the ins and outs of artist management, laying the groundwork to eventually join Canadian management company, Valeo Arts Management (VAM), where Christina was been part of the management team for JUNO award-winning Indigenous musicians, The Halluci Nation (fka A Tribe Called Red) and Jeremy Dutcher, as well as working with Haviah Mighty. Christina is now working under her own banner, DI:ME ARTS MGMT and continues growing with Haviah.

Haviah and Christina have already made Canadian hip-hop history together, with Haviah as the first Black woman and the first hip-hop artist to win the prestigious Polaris Music Prize in 2019, and as the first woman to win a JUNO Award in the Best Rap Album/EP of the Year category in 2022. With this team pushing forward together, there’s no doubt that there are more groundbreaking accolades and achievements on the horizon.
