Organizations & Events Supporting Indigenous Music Professionals

This June for National Indigenous History Month, we want to spotlight a few music industry organizations that support and uplift Indigenous music professionals in Canada. There is still a lot of work to do to create a more equitable music industry for all, and we recognize the importance of supporting underrepresented communities year-round, not just on national awareness months. If there are any other notable organizations you know of that we missed, please include them in the comments below, and we will look at creating a part two.

Manitoba Music - The Indigenous Music Development Program - Supports First Nation, Métis, and Inuit artists and music companies as they build sustainable careers in Manitoba’s music industry.

sākihiwē festival - (Formerly Aboriginal Music Week) takes music to Indigenous families in divested neighbourhoods so they can participate in the arts without sacrificing their family responsibilities, personal safety, or their ability to make ends meet.

Manito Ahbee Festival - The Manito Ahbee Festival celebrates Indigenous arts, culture, and music in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

Indigenous Performing Arts Alliance (IPAA) - A member-driven organization serving Indigenous artists and arts organizations across Turtle Island. It provides opportunities for arts and culture workers to connect with one another, gain skills and knowledge, and advertise their work and events among the network.

International Indigenous Hip Hop Awards Show - Aims to increase the national and international exposure of Indigenous urban arts performers and small businesses through live music engagement and educational conferences.

Summer Solstice Indigenous Festival - Summer Solstice Indigenous Festival is a multi-disciplinary arts festival that brings together Indigenous artists, performers, educators, students, and community members to share knowledge and celebrate Canada’s diverse Indigenous cultures.

Tkaronto Music Festival - The premier Indigenous-led events production service with the skills to craft, market, and document events for organizations both large and small.

International Indigenous Music Summit - The International Indigenous Music Summit (IIMS) is the only global event dedicated to creating awareness, sharing resources, and building opportunities for the Indigenous music community.
