Government of Canada Invests $70M to Support Artists and Live Music
MMF Canada was grateful to be part of the press conference today where the Minister of Canadian Heritage highlighted $70 million in funding over the next three years for the Canada Music Fund (CMF), announced in Budget 2021. We were able to share remarks on the effects of the pandemic on managers and artists as well as how continued funding is required as we rebuild.
The funding includes $50 million in 2021-22 to support the live music sector and Canadian artists during the transition to a sustainable recovery. The remaining $20 million is the renewal of additional funding first announced in Budget 2019 ($10 million each for 2022-23 and 2023-24) to help maintain the stability of Canada’s funding system for commercial music and further enshrine modernization into the CMF, including artist promotion, export activities and skills development.
This is in addition to the $15 million in 2021-22 being delivered by the CMF through the Support for Workers in Live Arts and Music Sectors Fund and $7 million in 2022-23 for music festivals not funded through other departmental programs through the recently announced Recovery Fund for Arts, Culture, Heritage and Sport Sectors and the Reopening Fund.
As with all CMF funding, the $70 million that the Minister highlighted today will be delivered through its third-party administrators, the Foundation Assisting Canadian Talent on Recordings (FACTOR) for the Anglophone market and the Fondation Musicaction (Musicaction) for the Francophone market. Both organizations will be launching this new support for the live music sector in the coming days.
