MMF CANADA WEBINAR: Copyright 101

TWITTER June 30 2021 Webinar.png

DESCRIPTION
Did you know that every track has 2 distinct copyrights? Music is unique in that every recorded track embodies a copyright in the song, i.e. the musical composition; and a second copyright in the sound recording, or “master recording” itself. Having a clear understanding of the copyright you or your artist owns and manages is key to understanding legal agreements with publishers, co-writers, and labels, as well as effectively monetizing artistic works in the digital world.

This session will provide attendees with an overview of Canada’s copyright laws and how they intersect with music creators and businesses.  We will look at:

  • What is a copyright? What does a copyright do?

  • What are the copyrights in music?

  • Who owns a copyright (independent artist vs signed artist) and for how long?

  • How do I copyright a song?

  • What is copyright infringement?

  • General Q+A.

This session is recommended for artist managers and self-managed artists who are looking to learn more or brush up on their existing copyright knowledge.
