Join us for a dynamic and comprehensive event series designed to empower and engage artist managers in mastering the intricacies of music business management. Designed by Business Manager Oko Shio (Music By Numbers), these sessions will look at financial management, cash flow strategies, budgeting techniques, understanding royalty payments, and proficient bookkeeping -  tailored to the unique needs of artist managers and the music industry.

  • Financial Management: Uncover the key principles of financial management, from creating sustainable revenue streams to optimizing expenses. Learn how to navigate the financial intricacies of the music business with more confidence.

  • Cash Flow Control: We will talk about strategies to maintain healthy cash flows in the ever-changing landscape of the music industry. Gain insights into planning for both short-term and long-term financial stability.

  • Budgeting for Success: Crafting effective budgets that align with your artist's creative vision and projects are essential for business and funding opportunities.

  • Decoding Royalty Payments: Demystify the world of royalty payments, from streaming revenues to performance royalties. Understand how to maximize earnings for your artists.

  • Sound Bookkeeping: Your bookkeeping should be tailored for music businesses - we will discuss record-keeping skills that support financial transparency and compliance.

This event series is specifically curated for artist managers and self-managed artists, and will be supportive for all industry professionals looking to gain a deeper understanding of music business management. All sessions will be recorded and shared in the Member Portal.

Oko Shio, President, Music By Numbers


Oko Shio's expertise is primarily related to financial budgeting, forecasting, and cost control as well as contract drafting, negotiation and rights clearances. As president of Music By Numbers, Oko acts as the business manager / CFO to various artists and entertainment companies He plays a key role in the administration and business affairs of his clients creative endeavors. Prior to running his own company, Oko was the Chief Financial Officer of the Donald K. Donald Entertainment Company since 2003. He was responsible for running the finances of the event division, the record labels, artist management division and agencies. 

The administration and business management team he leads works strategically with clients and develops the various reports required by the client, including but not limited to detailed reports which clearly identify at all times actual costs relative to the allocated budget. Furthermore, Oko dealsn and drafts all agreements necessary for the execution of mandates where required. He has access to a vast network of legal experts in the event that he has a technical legal question or issue he wants to clear up. 

Oko’s attention to detail and keen grasp on the rudder for all project accounting has served his clients well on all its their projects. Most notably, Oko was instrumental in providing detailed financial reporting, transparency, and easy-to-follow budgets and backup as required by projects produced for the Government of Canada and major private clients such as Canada’s cultural program at Expo 2005 in Aichi, Japan, Canada Day shows on Parliament Hill in 2005, 2009, and 2010, tour reporting for U2, Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Shania Twain to name a few. 

Such responsibilities call for an exceptional level of accuracy and detail, and Oko’s exacting standards have garnered him quite a reputation among our repeat clients for the “Oko binders” filled with detailed payment and backup information at the closing of each project. 

Prior to joining the DKD family, Oko developed his experience working with CAI Corporate Affairs International, a Montreal-based management consulting company specialized in analyzing businesses, preparing strategic business plans and securing financing for multi-million dollar projects from sources both public and private. Throughout his career, Oko has worked with clients such as Hydro-Québec, Ericsson, Harris, IMS, Borden Chemical, Ilco Unican, and Mitel. Oko is fluent in both English and French and is a graduate from McGill University's undergraduate joint honours program in Finance and Economics. He also holds an MBA in Finance and Strategy from McGill, which he completed in 2009 while working full time.
