SPEAKERS:
Byron Pascoe (Edwards Creative Law)
Byron Pascoe is an entertainment lawyer and partner with Edwards Creative Law. Byron focuses on music law and works with recording artists, producers, managers, music service businesses and festivals. Before law school, he was a television and new media producer.
Based in Ottawa, Byron works with clients across Canada. In Ottawa, he organizes the monthly music professional development series Independent Music Business. He is also a board member of CityFolk, MEGAPHONO; is active with the national network of legal clinics for the arts; and was awarded the Impact Award at the inaugural Ottawa Music Awards.
Matt Gorman (Cox & Palmer)
Matthew Gorman is an entertainment lawyer, practicing in Cox & Palmer’s Halifax office. Matt has extensive experience within the entertainment, intellectual property, and digital rights space, where he advises performers, songwriters, producers, managers, social media influencers, music publishers, record labels, authors, and dynamic entertainment/digital businesses and disruptors. Matt regularly negotiates and drafts commercial and entertainment contracts of all kinds, and advises clients on international industry standards, rights management issues, and assists in dispute resolution.
Heavily involved in the music community, Matt is a frequent writer, lecturer and speaker on music topics at conferences and events all over the world, is a former Board/committee member of Music Nova Scotia and ECMA, and is a member of the International Association of Entertainment Lawyers. Matt also owns and operates Ocean Town Music, an entertainment company that manages multi-platinum producer/songwriter, Mike Sonier (Noah Cyrus, Julia Michaels, Maggie Rogers, The Weeknd, Ruth B., etc).
Paul Banwatt (Gilbert’s LLP)
Paul's practice includes high tech IP litigation, emerging technologies and music & entertainment law. In early 2020, Paul co-founded Slingshot, Gilbert’s LLP’s award-winning service for start-ups and small businesses. Paul has spoken on law and emerging technologies for IPIC, AIPLA, AMPPI, INTA, and the USPTO. Before rejoining Gilbert's LLP, Paul served as Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel of the 3D scanning start-up Matter and Form Inc.
Paul has also had a successful career as a musician. Paul's band, The Rural Alberta Advantage, has received two Juno nominations, a CBC Music Award, the Galaxie Rising Star Award, played the Coachella Music Festival, and continues to appear on Billboard sales and radio charts. Paul's music has been featured in numerous publications including Spin, NME, Playboy Magazine, and The New York Times.
Paul is currently the author of the music law blog, The Music Lawyer. Paul's previous 3D technology law blog, Law in the Making, was featured in Landslide, the intellectual property magazine of the American Bar Association.
