Understanding the role of a music publisher, publishing administration and the broader publishing ecosystem is an essential part of effective artist management.  Music publishing is a keystone for the career of any songwriter. Music Publishers Canada has created an in-depth course examining all aspects of the publishing industry and MMF Canada is proud to present the first iteration of this offering.

The course will be a combination of webinar-style presentations, panels, Q+A and breakout room discussions.

This course is suitable for music managers, self-managed artists, and other music industry professionals with beginner to intermediate knowledge of international music publishing.  In addition to the presentations, breakout groups will be created according to expertise, so that participants will get the most out of their sessions.

The Masterclass will be delivered over 2 intensive afternoons, and will include the following modules:

  • Introduction to Music Publishing – this foundational module introduces learners to the role of music publishers and what the Canadian music publishing industry looks like.

  • Rights & Licensing – This module provides an overview of the framework of rights, agreements, and licensing that exist for publishers to monetize songs.

  • Creative Role of the Publisher – This module explores the impact that music publishers can have on a songwriter’s career development and creative process.

  • Business Development – This module describes how music publishers use their skills and relationships to maximize income from songs.

  • Administration – This module explains the technology and processes that ensure rights holders see payment for song use, and the role music publishers play in this process.

Please note that these sessions will be interactive and participants will be encouraged to have their cameras and microphones on and to participate. There will also be breaks to allow you to step away from the screen.

Registration also includes access to MMF Connect - Managers and Publishers Mixer, with Music Publishers Canada and MMF Canada, on Thursday June 10, 2021, from 5PM EDT- 7:00PM.  Tickets for this special networking event will be free for Masterclass participants, MMF Canada Members and MPC Members, and $20 for non-members.
